New Research Environment Grant on Segregation from the Swedish Research Council

The Swedish Research Council has awarded a Research Environment Grant in Segregation to Karen Haandrikman for the project “Disentangling segregation at different scales: The role of intergenerational transmission, household mobility and housing development” (17.4 million SEK) for the period 2024-2029.

The programme aims to improve our understanding of the patterns, mechanisms and consequences of ethnic, socioeconomic and demographic segregation over time using a multiscalar approach and
including features of the built environment. Three mechanisms of segregation and its consequences for residential and socioeconomic inequalities are in focus: the role of intergenerational neighbourhood transmission, of residential sorting of mixed ethnic households, and of new housing constructions. The project has a comparative approach including Sweden and the Netherlands.

Involved researchers at Stockholm University are PI Karen Haandrikman, Juta Kawalerowicz and Ida Borg; at the University of Amsterdam: Willem Boterman and Joeke Kuyvenhoven.
