Research project Everyday doings of nations in families with multiple nationalities

In this dissertation project, Johanna Wallin explores how nations are (re)constructed in everyday life among families in Sweden with multiple nationalities. Through ethnographic fieldwork, the study investigates when, how, and where nations become relevant in the everyday lives of families with multiple nationalities.

Today, about 30% of children (0-17) born in Sweden grow up in families with multiple nationalities – where one or both parents were born outside of Sweden. Yet there is surprisingly little research on this. Much reasearch looks at family constellation or background as a factor that influences other aspects of life and well-being. Less in known about the everyday experiences of these families, and what it means to navigate multiple nationalities in everyday life. The thesis explores whether, when, how and where nations become relevant in everyday life for families with multiple nationalities and is based on eight months of ethnographic fieldwork with families in Sweden. The project contributes to the research fields of childhood geography, migration studies, and everyday nation.
